Reading and the 40 Book Challenge

This year I am excited to build a reading community as we take on the 40 Book Challenge. I am challenging all students to read 40 books by the end of the school year. I know they can do it!

The purpose of this challenge is for students to stretch themselves as readers by reading books they might not normally choose, and to increase their reading skills, confidence and love of reading.

Students will choose several books from the different genres/types that we will learn about in class. Books will be recorded as they are finished. Please note that grades will not given. The 40 Book Challenge is a personal challenge for each student.

Students will not be asked to track their minutes. Instead, students will have the opportunity to complete written responses and one minute book commercials on the reading they have done at home and at school.

Parents are asked to participate by encouraging and assisting their child with book choices and by discussing what they are reading with them. Students are encouraged to read to themselves as well as to enjoy some shared reading time with mom, dad, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents and others.

As part of their homework responsibilities, Grade 4 students are expected to read every night for at least 20 minutes. Reading for just 20 minutes every night is a simple way increase vocabulary and practice lifelong essential reading skills.
